In a Domestic Setting – 31
But many villagers held Holy Mother in great respect. Women visited her with their children and grandchildren and were rewarded with sweets and fruits. She helped her neighbours financially by purchasing fruits and vegetables from them. During the days of religious festivals she gave sumptuous feasts to the villagers. There was a village watchman named Ambika, whom Holy Mother had addressed during her childhood as ‘Brother.’ He was an untouchable. One day, in later years, he said to her: ‘People call you a goddess, the Divine Mother, and by other such names. I do not understand all this.’ Holy Mother said: ‘You don’t have to understand. Just remember that you are my brother Ambika and I am your sister Sarada.’
