How did she give initiation? For the purpose of meditation, prayer, and worship, one requires an Ishta or Chosen Ideal, which may be a Personal God or the Impersonal Brahman. To Holy Mother, Sri Ramakrishna was the manifestation of the Supreme Spirit, the Incarnation for modern times. Most of her disciples accepted him as their Chosen Ideal. But she was not dogmatic. She often asked the aspirant, as she did the present write, whom he would accept as his Ishta. She also advised seekers to follow their family tradition. When they could not decide, she herself suggested the particular form and name of the Godhead. It is said that, just before the initiation, she herself would meditate and thus discover the mantra suited to the aspirant. It would be revealed in her pure mind. Sri Ramakrishna said that whatever one hears in the pure mind is the word of God. Pure mind and pure Atman are one and the same.
