Often devotees made unreasonable demands upon Holy Mother. Some would ask for a forthright reply to such questions as whether she was the Divine Mother of the Universe, and if so why he did not realize her as such. Some would want an immediate vision of God or of Sri Ramakrishna. She always succeeded in pacifying their restless minds. This happened at Jayrambati, Calcutta, and elsewhere. One day Holy Mother had just finished her daily worship when an unknown devotee appeared with some flowers, evidently to worship her feet. At the sight of the stranger, she sat on the bed wrapping herself with a shawl, as was her habit. The man made an elaborate genuflection, offered flowers, and began to perform breathing exercises and other rituals, as one does before an image. This went on for a long time, and the Mother began to perspire heavily under the shawl. Golap-Ma came to her rescue. She pulled the man up by the hand and said in her usual loud voice: ‘Do you think she is a wooden image, that you would awaken her spirit by breathing exercises and other rituals? Don’t you see the Mother is getting hot and very uncomfortable?’
