For Hannah Koch, the daughter of a Jewish doctor, joining others her age who will one day be part of Hitler’s resurgent Germany is but a dream until circumstances create an opportunity she finds she cannot pass up. Orphaned by the death of her father Lena Richter, the wife of an SS officer, reluctantly takes Hannah in as a favor to her sister. Hannah’s idyllic, if precarious existence as the adopted daughter of an important member of the SS, begins to unravel when Ernst Richter takes command of a concentration camp in Poland. There Hannah is confronted with the terrible truth of what Richter and men like him have been doing in the name of the German people.
