Close friend since 1969 |

Randy Hood’s Aloha and Remembrances of Justin Justin was like a brother to me and his passing at a relatively young age was devastating. We met in 1969 or 1970. We had seen each other learning to surf at RAT beach and then shared our surf stories during lunch at Malaga Cove Junior High which was right next to the beach. I also met Dana Cline at the same time since he had already been friends with Justin After graduating from 8th grade, all 3 of us went to PV High and did things together often. In 1972, Justin, Steve, Bruce and I took scuba lessons at Dive N Surf and were certified in August of that year. We had a great time scuba diving around RAT, Haggerty’s and other areas around Palos Verdes and Catalina. One year (probably 1974) we all sailed to Catalina with Justin’s dad and anchored off the Isthmus at Two Harbors. That was the best diving of my life along the vertical wall of Blue Caverns that went down over 100 feet not too far from the shore. The visibility was also about 100 feet. Later that night we were entertained by the bioluminescence in the water. Justin and I were roommates at Cal Poly during our freshman year in 1975 and quad mates with Bob Palomba and Huey Long in our sophomore year. Justin and I did things together all the time including jogging along Poly Canyon 3 or 4 times per week. I was a resident advisor and lived in the dorms my Junior and Senior years at Cal Poly, but Justin and I still did things together often. He helped me fix my VW bug when it needed major engine repair. He taught me quite a bit about how to fix cars. When the VW was involved in a car accident (also around 1974) he bought it from me, fixed it up and drove it as his main car. One time Justin, Dana and I drove it up to Oregon to see Phil Andre at his new house. That was a marathon drive with each of us taking turns at the wheel. After we graduated from college we kept in contact for about a year, but then I moved to Marina Del Rey and Justin stayed in Portuguese Bend building his house. We lost contact for about 15 years and then Phil Andre got us back together around 1998 or so. I met Madeleine for the first time and Jessica who was very young. We often did things together. In the summer of 1999, Cheryl (my wife), Michelle (my first daughter) and I flew to Honolulu to see Justin finish the Transpac. Pyewacket won that year and Justin did a great job as a navigator on another sailboat. We stayed with Madeleine, Justin and Jessica at a very nice place they had been to before in Kailua. Justin and I became long distance paddleboarders around this time and we would paddle from either Torrance or RAT beach and up to the Lunada Bay area or in some cases to the R10 buoy. In 1999, I decided to enter Joe Bark’s Rock to Rock (Catalina to Palos Verdes) paddleboard race. Justin arranged an escort boat for me, and we all went over the night before and ate dinner at the Harbor Reef Restaurant (it had a different name at the time Maybe Doug’s?). The next morning, I completed the race, and I am always grateful to Justin arranging the escort boat of Kirk’s From that time on our families would do many activities together at various yacht clubs they belonged to and even a paddleboard race in San Diego we all participated in. About the time Gavin and my second daughter Rachel were born we stopped paddling on a regular basis, but we often went over to Justin’s house for holidays and the like. In 2019, Cheryl and I moved to Washington, and we no longer saw Justin and Madeleine as often, but I did follow them on social media. My daughter, Rachel and I came to visit in November of 2021 and in March of this year we went out for lunch with Justin and Madeleine. Justin also gave me a tour of the new solar panels they set up which was very impressive. Justin seemed so healthy and happy with his new retirement and so proud of Jessica and Gavin. Not only was Justin a very smart person, he was also one of the most even-tempered people I have ever known. I don’t think we ever had a major argument, and I don’t recall ever seeing an angry outburst from him. This is the first time I have lost a close friend, and I had no idea how hard it would be. I will never see Justin again, but my memories of our good times will always be with me. |

Justin, I remember being with you aboard restless - you had such a thing for Madeline (Mad Dog), and when I announced that I had just heard that she had broken up with her previous boyfriend you were an interest in nothing else but to get back to Land soon as possible to contact her. The rest is history as they say. So proud and grateful to have known such a wonderful man, husband, father, and sailor. As Jimmy Buffett said, it’s been a lovely cruise. Sail on sailor. |

Justin was a great influence on my sailing. We sailed a bunch on Wednesday nights and a couple of races to the island. Glad to have shared time on water. He was so fun to sail with. RIP Justin Aloha David Doeh. |

Hello Justin - I can\'t comprehend that you are gone. Much too soon. I can only imagine how many people: friends and family and more, are devastated. Please know that you were one of my main pillars when we first met. Me being a new kid at PVHS in my senior year was intimidating and challenging. But I got incredibly lucky to have made friends with you, along with Randy Hood, Bob Palomba, and Brian Nash. You all were incredible and open to letting me in to a great circle of friends. It was like you had known me for many years. So my PVHS experience was very good thanks to my new friends. Many good times away from the school scene, for sure. The mail truck! Riding on the back of your motorcycle! Enrolling at SCROC and being accepted by the Inglewood guys... and that we were honored to be called \'blood\'! Like we weren\'t white LOL (whereas other ethnicities were \'cuz\'!) So you and I often called each other \'blood\'! College planning was taking shape in \'75, and I was influenced by you and others who decided on Cal Poly SLO. I knew little about it at first, but it was THE place to be, so I joined you guys in \'77. Another great experience with my PV pals. Careers then took off and everyone went separate ways. You stayed local in your incredible and innovative house. Coming home to PV meant I could stop by your place or meet up. Thank goodness for email, then Facebook, where we all have kept in touch. I am proud to have known you since back in the 70\'s. I have been proud to have had you as a good friend ever since. I hope we will meet again beyond this earth. Sail On, Sailor. - Kirk |
